The unmistakable elements of a Pete Dye design and Virginia Tech’s commitment to excellence and tradition are immediately apparent from the moment you arrive at “The River”. The course hosted the 2011 NCAA Regional Championships and the 2016 Virginia State Amateur Championships, and continues to be one of the top courses in the region. The River Course is proud to be the home of the Virginia Tech and Radford University golf teams.

Whether you simply want to warm up before you play or are looking for a place to improve your game, our practice complex includes a large practice tee, chipping green with bunkers and a 10,000 sq. ft. putting green. Range balls are available by the bucket and range plans are available for those patrons who wish a greater value.

Dress Code

Members and guests of the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech are expected to be dressed in appropriate golf attire using the following guidelines:

  • Collared or mock shirts are required for men
  • Soft spikes only (metal spikes are not allowed)
  • Denim jeans or denim shorts are not allowed
  • Shorts must be Bermuda length
  • Ladies blouses and shirts should have either a collar or sleeves
  • Along with the golf course, the dress code applies to the putting green, driving range, practice areas and the pro shop.
  • Management may refuse service or ask individuals to leave the facility if they are deemed inappropriately attired.

The course is a semi-private, daily fee facility and is open to the public. Golfers of all abilities are welcome and we encourage you to call the golf shop at 540-633-6732 or 1-888-Pete Dye to reserve your tee time. Tee time reservations can be made up to ten days in advance.

USGA Slope and Rating

A USGA COURSE RATING is the USGA's evaluation of the playing difficulty of a course for scratch golfers under normal course and weather conditions for the purpose of handicap indexes. It is expressed as strokes taken to one decimal place, and is based on yardage and other obstacles to the extent that they affect the scoring of a scratch golfer. A USGA SLOPE RATING evaluates the relative playing difficulty of a course for players who are not scratch golfers. The lowest USGA Slope Rating is 55 and the highest is 155. A golf course of standard playing difficulty has a USGA Slope Rating of 113.

The Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech offers a world-class golf course and a distinctive clubhouse for hosting a grand event at an affordable rate. Our staff of PGA professionals provides complete tournament management services that will ensure a successful outing customized to meet the needs of your group. Whether you are planning a small golf outing, a large corporate event or a charity fundraiser, our staff will facilitate your every need. Special package rates are available for groups of 24 or more.
Catering services for your event are available through Preston's at The River. We will work with you to serve your guests with pre-game or post-game food functions, accommodating your requests and your budget. Beverage cart service and alcoholic beverage service is available.

Reservation Procedures:
Reservations for groups of 24 or more may be made up to one year in advance. Once a verbal reservation is agreed upon, a group contract will be mailed for approval. Upon receipt of your signed contract, you will be placed on the tournament schedule. Golf Instruction

Individual Instruction
Are you looking to take your game to the next level? Individual instruction allows our PGA professional staff to evaluate the areas where your game needs the most improvement. Lessons, including a golf swing and short game evaluation take approximately 40 minutes. Developmental lessons can take up to an hour and playing lessons are approximately 2 hours. Group Instruction

Do you feel like you might be more comfortable in a group or class atmosphere? If so, we offer a wide array of clinic experiences geared towards beginners, women, college students, faculty/staff, and specific elements of the short game. Junior Golf

We offer a Junior Golf Camp each summer.
Schedule: Monday-Wednesday 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m.-1 p.m.


Monday - Introduction to golf, rules and etiquette. Rules and etiquette test administered at completion of course. Putting class and competition will complete the day’s activities.

Tuesday - Introduction of fundamentals including grip, stance, alignment and posture. Short iron full swings, swing assessment and correction.

Wednesday - Mid & Long irons. Bunker play, pitch and chip shots. Swing assessment and correction. Competition at the end of the day’s activities.

Thursday - “Skills Competition”. Points accumulated in 5 categories: Driving, Putting, Chipping, Pitching and Bunker play. Awards following and Pizza party.

Cost is $150 per child (two children $250, three children $325 - must be same family). Includes all range fees, instruction, prizes and pizza party. Sunblock and drinks are provided.
